Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident made him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
