Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
