Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
