Conservative responses to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of files that included little previously unseen data.
