Our Top Release of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, Lux might appear closer to a challenging university quiz rather than a new pop project from a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Broken into four different sections and performed in 13 languages, we have a breathtaking symphonic album exploring feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently via the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, supported by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast list of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in avoid overly intellectual posturing feels almost miraculous, and sole praise belonging to the artist. Although this is not her first album to fuse historical sounds and the present, its stakes are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stunning Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Then, everything falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral surge thuds in with comedic impact. The song then shifts to the wild single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album is that you never exactly know—or even wish to know—where it will go next."

Almost each track concludes at a completely different point than how it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into digital cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic work begins off dark and brooding, with prowling beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves navigating the line between radical innovation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has become the artist's first work to break into the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks as it spirals upward. This trick is echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter from discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
