Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
