TikTok Provides The Community Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the volume of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service announced that it now features more than 1 billion content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This advancement comes amid a surge in AI-generated material, driven by new AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is considered “AI slop”, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to give people the option to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” commented a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. In total, over 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the amount of AI content they see by opening the “manage topic” setting in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that are already be modified under the tool cover news, clothing, beauty, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s rules mandate creators to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

Furthermore, the platform will now attach an AI-generated label to content produced via its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore launching a two million dollar educational fund for experts and institutions to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will benefit charitable organizations dedicated to educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its content review process, following discussion over proposals to cut jobs for numerous content moderators in Britain. TikTok is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most distressing content before it is viewed by staff. The company stated a notable drop in explicit and harmful content reviewed by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
