Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
